"Lego Crimes"
5 Questions
1) What elementary teacher lets their students start an economy based off of a lego currency?
2) Did she ever laugh at her students over their lego dilemmas?
3) How did these "grade school gangs" develop?
4) Was this something that was traditional?
5) Did the teachers think that these students had potential in the life of possibly the mafia?
6 Details
Micaela Blei is an elementary school teacher whose class runs "underground" gangs. They are not the violent type of gang but more like a 7,8, or 9 year-old, "think I'm bad" kind of gang. There are 3 grades ranging from second to fourth. According to Micaela, the students contain a lego currency; each piece having its own value. In this story, some jewels, valuable pieces, are stolen from another grade and suspicion is raised. Micaela's students confront her, explaining that their jewels are missing. Micaela went along the students, trying to get a confession. She finds that one of her students had taken all the "jewels" and built a spaceship. She comes up with a plan to get the "jewels" back to the students; to convince the student to dismantle his spaceship. Her plan works and she ends up secretly putting back all the jewels. In the end, Micaela finds herself as an accessory to a "third-grade crime."
How I feel
While I listened, I couldn't stopped laughing. I couldn't believe that these seemingly small and so young elementary schoolers could manage such intense schemes on one another. They even go as far as to rob other students of their prized lego bits. I found this to be particularly funny because of how much elementary school has evolved over the years and how suprised Micaela was that her students could pull off such huge "heists." Personally, I would recommend that anyone listen in to this story on "The Moth".

"All I wanted to do was get revenge."
This was a story about a man who, as a child, learned that his brother had been murdered and how he wanted to get revenge on the people that did it. This story took place around the same time racism was a bit more intense, where blacks were sought out and attacked either physically or verbally.
Five Questions I have:
a) How old were you when you found out that your brother died.
b) Did you have a guess on what happened, looking back on the era in which this event happened?
c) Was you family devastated with their loss? Were they angry, sad, disappointed, etc?
d) Did you know the people that killed your brother?
e) What do you think your brother was doing before this incident?
2) Six Details found in the story:
In the story Charlie, the man whose brother, Jesse had been murdered during the 1930s, expresses how he was in school, had been called out of class, and was informed that his brother was found down by the side of a river, dead. He explains how he felt saddened but at the same time angry. Charlie says that they told him that he drowned when what really happened was that he was murdered. He was a negro and the people that killed him were white. They had lynched him- shot, castrated and thrown into a river. Since this event, Charlie had lived on with the weight of hatred on his shoulders. He didn't sleep well; he had nightmares and often cried in his sleep, according to his wife.
3) How I feel about what happened in the story:
I found this shocking as well as sad because I also have siblings and I cannot imagine what I would do if I were to lose any of them. For someone as close as family to pass away hurts and is crippling in a way. Sometimes it can change a person's life. Charlie lost his brother out of racism and has carried the burden of hate over his head. I don't think that I could find it in myself to hate another, but at the same time forgiveness is not so easily given either.
"They were amazed that he lived as long as he lived..."
1) 5 questions
a) What did your father do to get dust in his lungs?
b) What the father do day after day?
c) Were you happy having had your father live as long as he did?
d) Do you hope to follow in his footsteps?
2) Six details
In the story Gloria Del Bianco's father, Luigi, had died after living a long and happy life as one of the chief stone carvers of Mt. Rushmore. His unfortunate death occured due to too much dust within his lungs. He had to go to the hospital on numerous occasions. After he died, an autopsy was performed to see the cause. He had so much dust in his lungs was "like a rock" according to the doctors.
3) How I feel about what happened in the story
I am glad that Luigi survived as long as he did with his condition because I found it to be inspiring. I say this because he's proven that even though one's health is not at its best, there is no reason to not keep pushing forward. He was another strong soul who knew what to do when life threw another obstacle in his way, and through this, he's taught others to not give in but to keep going head-strong
